Verry Elleegant Stakes 2024

Distance: 1600m | Conditions: WFA | Rail Position: True | Track Condition: Soft 5

Formerly the Chipping Norton, the newly named Verry Elleegant Stakes headlines a huge weekend of racing across the country. Racing fans are eagerly awaiting the second-up run of Fangirl, who will be looking to win it for Chris Waller and James McDonald and how fitting would that be! Can anyone upset the party or does the mare get it done?

Just Fine for Waterhouse and Bott will roll forward and take control with Think It Over, Lindermann or Arapaho just off him in company. Buckaroo should sit a lot closer than he did from the Apollo in cover while Cascadian and Fangirl will go back from the wide draw which is no issues with their racing styles anyway.

1: jockey silks Think It Over (3)

Superstar who has come back very nicely. Was brave in the Apollo where he was found under pressure at the top of the straight but kept on finding, holding on for third. Would take a monster effort to turn the tables on Fangirl, but he can run well again.

2: jockey silks Cascadian (9)

Old-timer now but his first-up run suggests he’s still got plenty in the tank. Never given an opportunity to let down but made ground with any chance he did get and still held with them. He’ll go back again here from the draw under Tom Marquand and should be running on strongly, hopefully with a bit more luck.

3: jockey silks Arapaho (8)

Nice horse who returned well in the Apollo but he’ll find this too sharp. Watch for him third and fourth up.

4: jockey silks Buckaroo (1)

He’s going well this bloke and a win isn’t too far off for him. Went back in the Apollo and couldn’t sprint with them but was very strong late. Up to the mile will suit and from the softer draw he can settle much closer. Nice each-way chance.

5: jockey silks Just Fine (2)

Resumes here having won first-up over the mile last preparation, albeit in a benchmark race. Carried on to have a very good campaign but I think the best of him will come at 2000m+. Can run a nice race but there’s others I’d be looking at before him considering the price.

6: jockey silks Navajo Peak (4)

Caught wide in the Apollo but boxed on well and earned a pass mark. Will get a much softer run from the gate and should give another good account of himself. Won the Chelmsford second up at $40 last preparation, and could be a value play to sneak into the minor placings.

7: jockey silks Lindermann (5)

Started this campaign exactly as he did in the Spring, no luck upon straightening but ran on with purpose nonetheless and would’ve figured in the placings if things had’ve gone his way. Should get a similar run in transit from Barrier 5 and I think can make his presence felt. Place chance.

8: jockey silks Athabascan (6)

Will peak over further, won’t win this.

9: jockey silks Fangirl (10)

What a return it was for Fangirl in the Apollo Stakes. The way in which she idled up alongside them and dropped them without McDonald really shaking the reins was Winx-like, and suggests she’s in for a huge prep. Wide alley is no concern considering her racing style, and up to the mile she’ll be in her sweet spot. Like many, I think it’s a case of by how many lengths she wins this. Only concern would be rain as anything beyond a Soft 5 finds her vulnerable.

10: jockey silks Atishu (7)

Dual Group 1 winner and dually nominated this weekend in this and also the Blamey at Flemington. With the Australia Cup in mind, I wouldn’t be shocked if they keep her in Melbourne, but should they decide to run her in this no doubt she’ll improve off her first-up run over 1400m. She’ll give a good account of herself here and is one for the multiples.

Fangirl wins this comfortably. So will looking for Lindermann to run on home and place for a bit of value.
