The Underwood Stakes

Sunday sees us with the Group 1 Underwood at Sandown and despite the small field, four runners currently in the top six of the Cox Plate futures market take part in this race so there’s no shortage of talent here. Let’s try and tip you a winner.

There’s been chatter of Alligator Blood potentially taking a sit here which would be surprising. Regardless, Zaaki will be looking to lead with Mr Brightside camped on him. Nonconformist and Mo’unga will be behind them and I’m Thunderstruck will be the one swooping from the back.

Key Runners

1: Zaaki

Scratched from last weekend’s George Main for this which we were keen to be with him in. Won the race last year. Will control this from the opening 100m, looks the deserving favourite and very hard to beat. Happy to be with him.

2: I’m Thunderstruck

Terrific win last start, albeit right on the line, running down Alligator Blood. Looks a tricky task to do the same here with Zaaki. Has never run 1800, but had a go at 2000m in Sydney but was never in it on the Heavy ground. The short price doesn’t appeal as much as it did last start. Clear winning chance but willing to risk unless we see a big drift ($4.00+).

3: Alligator Blood

The X-Factor in this field, especially if they decide not to lead which I can’t see happening with Clark sticking with the ride. First time ever at the distance is an unknown. Unfortunately, it’s hard to see him holding off the swoopers and/or sticking with Zaaki. Would need a Tim Clark masterclass to turn over either of the two favourites.

4: Mr Brightside

Price looks a bit short in a field of this quality. Hasn’t got the turn of foot like I’m Thunderstruck but is unlikely to stay and sprint away with the leaders. Is the clear risk in this race.

5: Mo’unga

Rattled home ok last start but unfortunately just hasn’t looked anywhere near his best. Priced fairly until we see something a bit more, especially against a field like this.
