Coolmore Stud Stakes 2023

Distance: 1200m | Conditions: Set Weights| Rail Position: True | Track Condition: Good 4

The Coolmore Stud Stakes may not have the history of other races on the card, but it’s the one that will interest many with some top level 3yo horses in the field. Let’s try and find the winner.

Speed Map

Straight race, so the best ground will be key here. Grand Impact, Custodian, Doull, Queen of the Ball and Best of Bordeaux can all lead but after that, it’s tricky to say who may settle there, especially if the outside fence is where you want to be. If it is, you’d expect the likes of Jacquinot, Buenos Noches and Economics to kick up and be handy. If not, they may settle back. In Secret gets a fine draw to settle wherever she wants. Coolangatta will likely take a sit as well in this. Very hard race to map but the track will give us more intel by the jump.

Key Runners

1: jockey silks Shinzo (4)

The Golden Slipper winner went into the

2: jockey silksCylinder (14)

Wasn’t close to the winner but was a very good 3rd in the Manikato. Comes right into this if the outside fence is the place to be and could lead and win. $20 is more than fair and is a good each way chance again here.

3: jockey silksDon Corleone (3)

Hadn’t shown much this prep until last start, winning late off the back of a slow tempo. Did start under $10 in the Slipper, so has admirers out there. Not sure the race will pan out to his liking but is priced fairly as a small winning chance.

4: jockey silksVeight (18)

Beat the Blue Diamond winner and Jacquinot in the prelude so clearly has talent. Was a good run last start after an injury. If back to 100%, can give this race a real shake. Betting will tell us more so watch the market.

5: jockey silksKing’s Gambit (2)

Hasn’t shown much running against a few of these at the top of the market in previous starts. Happy to risk.

6: jockey silksSteparty (1)

Was a stride away from beating Giga Kick last start, which looks pretty good for this. Needs to improve off that run though, the same way The Everest winner did. Has the straight race experience and will rev up at the right time. Definite winning chance.

7: jockey silksArkansaw Kid (16)

Is 3/3 but maybe hasn’t beaten the level of field he’s getting here. Few unknowns and at $9, looks a bit short to consider, but can cause an upset.

8: jockey silksSnapback (13)

The form guide doesn’t show he was $2 in the Blue Sapphire before being scratched at the gates which you have to consider here. Hard to discount, outside of being the first straight track run. A good winning chance.

9: jockey silksScheelite (11)

Was good in the Prelude but average in the Guineas, albeit running on well. 1600 back to 1200m shouldn’t cause any issues. Fairly priced as one of the larger outsiders.

10: jockey silksI Am Unstoppable (12)

Giga Kick form looks pretty good, and has straight race experience as well. Market may reveal more by the jump. Can’t discount to place.

11: jockey silksOzzmosis (6)

Entitled to be a bit better last start when swamped on the turn at the Valley. Loses McDonald as well. Looks a tough ask.

12: jockey silksMexico (10)

Honest enough last start when leading and could do the same here. $126 does seem generous but looks a level below in this field.

13: jockey silksButch Cassidy (19)

Hard to improve to a level here to cause any sort of upset.

14: jockey silksMoravia (7)

Was scratched in the Manikato where I was keen to follow and nothing changes here. Kah to Williams is obviously no downgrade. Can settle on speed and burn a few of these off late, or lead and control. Good odds to bet.

15: jockey silksCelui (5)

Plenty of ticks here, with Godolphin, McDonald and a likely wet track .Can settle handy and really burn them off late with plenty still to give. Clear winning chance, but the price looks a little short to be with her. Would prefer $5 or longer.

16: jockey silksNadal (15)

Started $5 against Paulele and now we get $35 against horses her own age. Runs well at the distance, will be leading or very much on speed. Looks value at the current price and a good each way chance.

17: jockey silksTiz Invincible (9)

Would need a bit of luck to be in the placings here.

18: jockey silksStretan Angel (8)

Would need a bit of luck to be in the placings here.

19: jockey silks Treasurway (8)

Would need a bit of luck to be in the placings here.
