Futurity Stakes 2024

Distance: 1400m | Conditions: WFA | Rail Position: 5m | Track Condition: Good 4

Mr Brightside will gun for his sixth Group 1 as he heads the market as odds on favourite in the Futurity Stakes this weekend. A small but quality field will take on the champion galloper over the Caulfield 1400m but all the talk is they are simply making up numbers. Is this the case?

This looks relatively straight-forward. Buffalo River should get it all his way out in front with Hey Fat Cat pressing forward as he did in the CS Hayes. Mr Brightside should land within the first few pairs alongside Nugget and Pericles, leaving Attrition, Munhamek and Dom To Shoot rounding out the field.

Huge return in the CF Orr first-up, just kept finding and managed to pip Buffalo River and Pride Of Jenni on the line. He’ll settle closer here with expected improvement second-up and be too strong for them. Simple as that.

2: jockey silks Pericles (1)

Let down plenty of punters in a disappointing first-up performance in the CF Orr. Has four lengths to make up on Mr Brightside and I can’t see that happening. Was massive in the Golden Eagle second-up last prep so expect an improved effort here.

3: jockey silks Munhamek (4)

Got too far back in the CF Orr and never looked likely. Should get a better run here but I won’t be siding with him.

4: jockey silks Dom To Shoot (6)

Coming off a big Summer prep in WA where he claimed the G1 Northerly Stakes over the likes of Zaaki. He’s never won over 1400m though from nine attempts, and doubt he can do it in this. Can run a bold race though.

5: jockey silks Nugget (2)

Last seen in the King Charles III where he finished fourth behind Fangirl. This is one of his easier assignments of late but boy he can be  hard to find. Will get every chance from the draw and with Zahra aboard, but expect we’ll see better over further.

6: jockey silks Buffalo River (7)

What a run from the old-timer in the CF Orr, finishing a head behind Mr Brightside. Will get it all his way out in front for this and will be looking to pinch it off them. If he can replicate his last performance here, he may be Mr Brightside’s biggest threat.

7: jockey silks Attrition (8)

Won the G1 Toorak last time we saw him in action, on the back of a really nice preparation. Now the monkey is off the back. this is a great starting point for him and I think he could have another successful campaign. This might be a bit soon but he has struck first-up before and could surprise. He’s a must for exotics.

8: jockey silks Hey Fat Cat (3)

Led them up the straight in the CS Hayes and was found wanting late but was a nice effort considering how well he hung in there. Dare say he’s out of his depth here.

It’s no bank filler but Mr Brightside picks himself here. Arguably his easiest task to date, as the price suggests.
