Ballarat Cup 2023
Distance: 2000m | Conditions: Handicap | Rail Position: True | Track Condition: Good 4 (at time of publish)
Summer racing takes flight this Saturday from Ballarat, with the running of the $500,000 Listed Ballarat Cup. Taking a look at the market, it’s a wide open field with chances everywhere you look. What an edition we could be in for here, let’s find a winner!
Just Folk will roll to the front with En Francais on his outside or just off, while Young Werther and Red Sun Sensation look the second pair in running. Captain Envious should have no trouble getting to midfield, accompanied by Midnight Blue and Swords Drawn. Meanwhile, the two at the top of the market in Ain’tnodeeldun and Foxy Cleopatra will be forced back from the gate, making things pretty difficult.
Has been raced sparingly throughout the Spring, but is running well when he gets his chance. Ran into Buckaroo at a pivotal stage in the Champion Stakes last start and closed off late to finish third, and that formline is as good as any coming into this. Can carry weight, but if the track gets too wet it may be his downfall.
Has been knocking on the door all prep and finally got a deserved win last week at Caulfield. On the quick backup for this, stepping out to the 2000m for the first time. Rock hard fit, drawn favourably but I’m unsure he’ll see it out the trip convincingly. Any rain would enhance his chances.
Old timer who turned in and improved effort last time out in the Queen Elizabeth, but drops back to 2000m for this which I don’t like at all. Looks up against it to my eye.
Going for four on the bounce. Scratched last week due to the track downgrade, and would likely be the same case if this rain does rely considering he’s reliant on a good track if he’s to be any chance. Is a month and a half between runs now and although flying, is too short for me here.
Swords Drawn might be the play if you’re looking for a bit of value. Was a sound effort behind Just Folk last start, will appreciate the rise to 2000m and is a proven wet tracker. Maps to find a nice spot in the run and can be there in the finish.
Was an improved effort in the Seymour Cup last start but generally runs to his quote and it’s hard to see that changing here.
Great to see Skelm back at the races following a lengthy stint on the sidelines through injury. We will see the best of him as he builds into his campaign as he looks towards some races next year but is tough, honest and trialled respectably.
Followed up on her impressive second to Skew Wiff in the HKJ Club Stakes with another nice effort in the Cranbourne Cup. A wet track would really play into her hands and with the light weight she can go one better. Will need a big run from the draw.
This is a big step up for Captain Envious but he hasn’t put a foot wrong this prep and could argue he should have finished even closer in the Country Cup at Caulfield last start, closing off in nice time. Maps to settle closer here and can figure in the finish.
Is racing super consistently at the moment and deserves to get a win on the board. I’d imagine they’ll roll forward with him again and put him in the race, can be effective with the light weight. Exotics play.
Putting together a really nice campaign. Should get to the front with Just Folk without much trouble and look in it for a long way. Will also appreciate the cut out of the ground. 2000m looks fine.
Nice win last start at Cranbourne with the blinkers on but isn’t one I can consider. Nice staying type but will go back and struggle to make up ground, especially if the rain arrives.
He’s hard to catch but Young Werther comes out of the Champion Stakes for this where he was impressive, and can carry the big weight against a much weaker field.
